Featuring Mason Via, Saunders Family Band, and more!
In just four years, Mason Via has become a key figure in modern American roots music. He toured globally with Old Crow Medicine Show, earned a Grammy nomination for their album Jubilee, contributed to Grammy-nominated records by Molly Tuttle and Del McCoury Band, and released his solo debut, New Horizons. His latest project, Mason Via, is a self-titled album blending progressive and timeless bluegrass, reintroducing him as a southern storyteller and singer/songwriter.
Raised in Appalachia, Mason was immersed in bluegrass from an early age, inspired by fiddlers’ conventions and music festivals. His parents, one an award-winning bluegrass songwriter and the other a Deadhead, nurtured his musical growth. A talented singer, Mason began playing guitar and mandolin in his teens, winning competitions and writing songs. By the early 2020s, he had appeared on American Idol and toured with Old Crow.
The album reflects both his traditional roots and his evolving sound, featuring progressive players and bluegrass icons. Mason sees this record as a “homecoming,” returning to the community and traditions he grew up with. Tracks like “Wide Open” and “Mountain Lullaby” blend new and old influences, while songs like “Melt in the Sun” and “Fireball” showcase his broader musical range.
Recorded live with a tight group of musicians in Floyd County, Virginia, Mason Via captures raw, real performances. It marks his return to solo work, solidifying his place as a fresh voice in bluegrass music.
