The J-MUSIC Ensemble is an NYC-based, jazz-rooted instrumental band dedicated to bringing new perspectives to modern Japanese music. This dynamic 8-piece group blends electric guitar, keyboards, bass, and drums with a full horn section—saxophone, trumpet, and trombone—to create a bold yet nuanced sound. In line with jazz tradition, the horns are front and center, taking on a lead role typically reserved for vocalists.
Formed by saxophonist Patrick Bartley at the Manhattan School of Music, the ensemble was initially a creative outlet for a shared love of anime and video game soundtracks—genres rarely given the spotlight they deserve. The group combines the soulfulness and spontaneity of jazz improvisation with the melodic and emotional depth of Japanese music, offering a fresh and engaging listening experience that honors the original compositions.
Over time, J-MUSIC Ensemble’s repertoire has grown to include works from all corners of modern Japanese culture, featuring covers of artists like Perfume, Utada Hikaru, Yoko Kanno, PUFFY, and School Food Punishment. Every arrangement is transcribed and adapted by the ensemble’s own members, giving each performance a distinct and original voice.
The band frequently includes some of the most accomplished young musicians in the world, such as Daryl Johns, Max Calkin, and Leo P (from Too Many Zooz). With support from arrangers like Kyle Athayde and Khrystopher Williams, the ensemble’s library now includes over 100 transcriptions and arrangements spanning Japanese pop, anime, and video game music.
J-MUSIC Ensemble also leads the way for the J-MUSIC Alliance, a movement to unite fans of Japanese music worldwide. Through performances, educational opportunities, and cross-cultural engagement, the ensemble aims to foster a deeper appreciation of the connections between Japanese and American musical traditions.
2025 CLMF supporters receive early access to tickets for individual shows.
Individual tickets for the public go on sale on April 17th, 2025.
